I have conducted numerous interviews with jockey Rocco Bowen in the past, and from what I've learned, his journey as a jockey has never been straightforward.

Some would say he is one of the hardest working jocks on track but truthfully, most jockeys work equally hard.

On Thursday, July 31st, Rocco Bowen found himself galloping horses at Thistledown racetrack, a routine he had grown accustomed to over the years. The morning sun was just beginning to rise, casting a warm glow over the track as he skillfully maneuvered the horses, feeling the rhythm of their strides beneath him. Suddenly, his phone buzzed with an incoming call from Chicago, a city that held a special place in his heart due to his many experiences there. The voice on the other end was urgent, conveying a sense of importance, "Get your little black ass down here." This straightforward message was not just a call to action; it was an invitation to step back into a world where he felt valued and appreciated. Hawthorne racetrack was one of the many venues that had shown Rocco love and support throughout his career, a place where he had ridden countless races and built lasting relationships with trainers, owners, and fans alike. The camaraderie he had experienced there, along with the thrill of competition, had shaped him into the jockey he was today. He recalled the many times he had crossed the finish line, the cheers from the crowd ringing in his ears, and the exhilarating feeling of victory that came with it. The prospect of riding Empire Builder in the third race at Hawthorne filled him with excitement and nostalgia. Rocco understood that this was more than just a race; it was an opportunity to reconnect with a community that had embraced him during his formative years as a jockey. The words from the caller were not just a request; they were a reminder of the bond he had with the track and the people who made it special. With a sense of urgency and a spark of enthusiasm igniting within him, Rocco quickly made arrangements to head to Hawthorne. He knew that every race was a new adventure, filled with possibilities and challenges, and he was ready to seize this chance to showcase his skills once again. The thrill of the racetrack awaited him, and he was determined to make the most of this opportunity, proving once more that he belonged among the elite riders in the sport.

There was a minor issue. Chicago was a six-hour drive away, but he was determined to reach it, and he succeeded.

Rocco participated in the third race of the day at Hawthorne, securing a first-place finish with Empire Builder. He also competed in the seventh race, finishing fourth with Stronger Together. During these times, he receives support and appreciation from those around him who understand the horse racing industry.

On Sunday, August 3rd, Rocco Bowen will suit up to participate in a highly anticipated race at Mountaineer Racetrack, specifically competing in the prestigious West Virginia Derby. This event is known for attracting a competitive field of horses and talented jockeys, making it a significant highlight in the racing calendar. Rocco will be riding Extradition, a horse that recently showcased his capabilities by finishing fourth in the Ohio Derby. In that race, Rocco expertly guided Extradition home, navigating the challenges posed by a fast pace at Thistledown, which is known for its demanding conditions and competitive atmosphere. As Rocco prepares for the West Virginia Derby, he faces yet another challenging race, with the field appearing even tougher than the one he encountered at Thistledown. The competition is expected to be fierce, as many skilled horses and jockeys will be vying for victory. Trainer Jason DaCosta has shown his confidence in Rocco's abilities by choosing him once again to ride Extradition, recognizing the strong partnership they have developed. This trust is vital, especially in a race where every decision can impact the outcome. Rocco’s experience and skill will be crucial as he navigates the dynamics of the race, employing strategies that he has honed over time. The West Virginia Derby not only represents a chance for Extradition to prove himself against formidable opponents but also serves as a platform for Rocco to further establish his reputation as a top-tier jockey in the competitive world of horse racing. With all eyes on them, both Rocco and Extradition are poised to give their best performance, aiming for a strong finish that could elevate their standing in the racing community.
