Paramount Prince, Husbands, Casse and a winning attitude.

Last weekend we got to see a combination of Horse, trainer and jockey with one of the most wanted things at the racetrack. A winning attitude!

Paramount Prince won the King's Plate at Woodbine racetrack in 2023 which happens to be the one race which trainers want to win at Woodbine. Some things just cant be overlooked, trailing back through Paramount Prince's past performance you may see some areas where you have to acknowledge the work done by the trainer to get this horse to this point.

Let's start from the beginning when as a yearling the son of Society's Chairman was sold for $16,647. Paramount Prince's first race was a maiden optional claimer with a purse of $70, 700 and the claiming price was $40,000 at Woodbine racetrack. Let's get serious now, Paramount Prince won that race by nine lengths and at that time, which may seem like ages ago, he was ridden to victory by apprentice jockey of the year Slade Jones who has now retired from race riding at an early age and lives in Barbados.

If you look at the PPs of this horse since the initial first race you have to give all credit to the trainer and the direction he has been going. I think they were honest about the horse's performance and the way he had to be training to make the decisions that were made. He won the King's Plate and ran in two tough races afterwards with one finishing third and the other finishing thirteenth in a field of fourteen horses. Then he had a long break from racing beginning October 1st and we saw him come back on March 10th at Gulfstream Park in an optional claiming in which he was protected. Ridden to victory on that day by Irad Ortiz, he won the race on the all weather track by two lengths.

Call it what you want when it comes to horse racing and who dominates the tracks. The truth is that smart trainers become very good at what they do over time.

Patrick Husbands rode 8 races over the weekend.

  • Mark Casse 6 - won 3, 2 seconds and one third.

  • Kevin Attard 1 - 3rd

  • John Charalambous 1 - 5th

On June 29th Dancing N Dixie ridden by Jose Ortiz and trained by Mark Casse won the Tepin stakes at Churchill Downs in a race named after one of my favourite horses of all time, Tepin. Coincidentally the race was named after Tepin which was trained by Mark Casse.

At Woodbine Casse took four races of the day with three of them being graded stakes races.

Sofia Vives wins another stakes and adds a grade three title to her portfolio with Sabatini trained by Josie Carroll.

In one of the races I checked on my list to watch on June 30th was the 7th race at Woodbine racetrack. I had anticipated Rat Portage winning this race and indeed he won making it four wins from fourteen starts with all being at Woodbine racetrack.

Ridden to victory by Jason Hoyte, train by Sylvester Ollivierre. The horse comes from a small stable, own by Jamar Gibson and always seem to be in good condition.

The horse broke last and you may have think that he was out of it for a second. If it was design or not Hoyte steadily guided Rat Portage from last and cruised past the field making it look like training. Well ridden, well done!
